Patchwork Holiday Fabrics: A Fresh Twist on Christmas Classics

The holiday season is all about tradition, coziness, and those little details that make our homes feel extra magical. This year, I wanted to give my Patchwork Holiday pattern a fresh update.

Folded tea towel Patchwork Holiday hanging on a wooden ladder with a fabric tree and bauble in classic green and tree design
Playful Holiday Patchwork fabric folded on a kitchen counter and a bright green Christmas Bauble and Fabric Tree

The holiday season is all about tradition, coziness, and those little details that make our homes feel extra magical. This year, I wanted to give my Patchwork Holiday pattern a fresh update - bringing together whimsical motifs, cheerful colors, and a touch of modern simplicity.

A Playful Mix of Icons

The heart of this collection lies in its patchwork design. Whimsical Christmas icons - evergreen trees, birds, houses, and joyful details come together in a quilt-inspired layout. Each square feels like a tiny story, creating a pattern that is playful yet nostalgic, perfect for evoking that cozy holiday spirit.

Evergreen Charm

Balancing the patchwork, I created a simpler tree pattern with a forest of evergreens. Minimal yet full of character, it pairs beautifully with the busier designs, giving you the freedom to mix and match depending on your mood or décor style.

Bringing Holiday Magic Into Your Home

From tea towels in the kitchen to festive fabric trees and ornaments, these designs bring warmth and joy to any space. Whether you’re setting a holiday table, decorating your living room, or gifting something handmade, the Patchwork Holiday designs add that special seasonal touch.

Handmade Inspiration

These patterns aren’t just for decorating. They’re also perfect for DIY projects and handmade gifts. Imagine wrapping a loaf of homemade bread in a holiday towel, sewing festive table runners, or crafting ornaments that will be cherished for years to come.

Timeless, Yet Fresh

While inspired by tradition, the Patchwork Holiday fabrics bring in fresh colors and a modern twist. It’s a collection designed to spark nostalgia while still feeling current, making it a perfect addition to your holiday celebrations this year.

Layering Textures

Incorporate natural textures such as a wooden ladder or a bamboo bath mat. These elements will enhance the coastal vibe while providing a cozy feel.

Retro Halloween Design Collection - DIY Ideas

Autumn is approaching soon, and there’s no better time to get crafty with charming prints. The Retro Halloween design collection features vintage-inspired patterns with quirky black cats, haunted houses, and candy-colored stripes in autumn palettes.

Autumn is approaching soon, and there’s no better time to get crafty with charming prints. The Retro Halloween design collection features vintage-inspired patterns with quirky black cats, haunted houses, and candy-colored stripes in autumn palettes. Whether you're decorating your home, sewing gifts, or creating wearable pieces, this collection brings a touch of playful nostalgia to every project.

Here are 7 DIY ideas to bring these prints to life:

1. Trick-or-Treat Tote Bags

Functional, festive, and reusable - these totes are perfect for little ones collecting candy or for stylish grocery runs all season long. Try mixing and matching the cat and house prints for an extra layer of visual interest.

🪡 DIY Tip: Use heavy cotton or canvas from Spoonflower for extra durability, and line the inside with a fun coordinating fabric!

2. Throw Pillows with Personality

Add instant Halloween charm to your living room or veranda with pillow covers made from the house pattern. The warm orange tones and illustrated haunted houses are playful without being overly spooky.

🪡 DIY Tip: Create reversible pillows with a different design (like stripes or bats, hats and cats) on the back for an extra interest.

3. Hair Scrunchies with a Spooky Twist

Scrunchies are quick, beginner-friendly sewing projects. And they are a great way to use up fabric scraps! Pair the prints for a fun mix-and-match set.

🪡 DIY Tip: Add a little bow or mini charm for extra flair.

4. Witch Hat Decoration or Costume Piece

This statement witch hat is a showstopper, whether worn as part of a costume or used as a tabletop centerpiece. The retro house print gives it a fun, vintage flair that feels more storybook than scary.

🪡 DIY Tip: Stiffen the brim with interfacing or craft felt to help it hold its shape.

5. Seasonal Tea Towels

Swap out your everyday linens for something a little more magical. The bold black cat design adds a classic, moody charm, while the warm orange village scene featuring a playful witch cat, brings a retro vibe to your kitchen. Perfect for adding a festive touch to your home or gifting to your Halloween host.

🪡 DIY Tip: Hem the edges neatly and add a fabric loop for easy hanging!

6. Reusable Gift Wrap or Napkins

The smaller-scale stripe and icon prints are perfect for sewing cloth napkins or eco-friendly gift wrap. They're especially cute when tied with twine or a wooden tag.

🪡 DIY Tip: Use pinking shears to avoid fraying without sewing if you're short on time.

7. Notebook Covers & Book Sleeves

Dress up your journals and reading material with custom covers! The retro designs make these perfect for back-to-school vibes, Halloween party favors, or thoughtful seasonal gifts.

🪡 DIY Tip: Add fusible fleece for a padded finish to protect books and tablets.

Final Thoughts

The Retro Halloween collection isn’t just for Halloween night. It’s a celebration of autumn creativity. Whether you're an experienced maker or a weekend crafter, these cozy and quirky prints offer endless ways to bring warmth, charm, and a bit of hocus pocus to your handmade projects.

Designing for Wallpaper

Among the latest themes of the Spoonflower Design Challenges was designing for wallpaper. I then read the Spoonflower blog post with tips for designing wallpaper and large-scale patterns. Spoonflower recommends that your design should be a width of 24” (61 cm) that will repeat evenly.

Large-scale pattern and the influence of watercolour painting

Among the latest themes of the Spoonflower Design Challenges was designing for wallpaper. I then read the Spoonflower blog post with tips for designing wallpaper and large-scale patterns. Spoonflower recommends that your design should be a width of 24” (61 cm) that will repeat evenly.

For the Hidden Whimsy Wallpaper challenge, I went for an abstract architectural design. I started with a rough sketch on my iPad using the app Procreate and made sure my idea would repeat correctly. I then illustrated and created my pattern in Adobe Illustrator. When it comes to designing, I usually get a rough idea that develops and changes while creating. So, I suddenly felt like incorporating some hidden giant black cats among the houses, which makes the pattern more interesting and cute.

Illustration process of the design Between Houses showing Houses abstract houses and hidden black cats.

To give the pattern a more haptic and hand-drawn feel, I added a texture layer as a final touch. My design “Between Houses” placed 11th out of more than 1300 design entries. This design may also look nice on pillows, tea towels, table cloths, or aprons. Or maybe on your sewing project?

For the challenge theme Italian Villa Wallpaper, I decided to translate my experience with watercolour painting into a hand-drawn vector pattern.  Italy reminds me immediately of the beauty of Tuscany landscapes. I have participated in watercolour painting courses in Tuscany twice lately, fascinated by the soft hills, strong nature, and warm colours. Originally, I intended to use a more earth-tone colour palette, but then my inner self took over, and I ended up with a quite vibrant landscape pattern in an abstract hand-drawn style. Sometimes, it’s just about following your gut and heart, as it is with watercolour painting.

Illustration process form sketch to the final illustration of an abstract Tuscany landscape

Also, for the Tuscany landscape wallpaper design, I did a rough sketch in Procreate beforehand, whereas the main art process happened in Adobe Illustrator. For the colours, I chose what I naturally felt drawn to and mixed it via the multiply function on my digital canvas as watercolour pigments would on your paper. When it comes to watercolour painting, there is almost no way to undo certain steps. You have to wait and see what happens, adapting and accepting during the process. With this design, I used a similar approach—not following a certain concept or rules but creating by trial and error. And sometimes you might be surprised by what is happening on your paper, as I was here on this digital canvas.

For my shop on Spoonflower, I turned the Tuscany Landscape design into a placement print to fit nicely on a tea towel or wall hanging.

Yours,

Priska

Wall-hanging or curtain design for an `Advent Window`

Somewhere in a Swiss forest, suddenly, an owl wakes up and listens to noises of work in the kitchen. – saucepans, plates, `clatter, clatter’; and what is this smell? Some cooking?

Somewhere in a Swiss forest, suddenly, an owl wakes up and listens to noises of work in the kitchen. – saucepans, plates, `clatter, clatter’; and what is this smell? Some cooking?

Do you know the silence of a cold, snowy winter night when everyone is asleep? Or not everyone perhaps...? Can you hear the soft music and the whispering of the forest animals?

This year I decided to participate in a project where, during the weeks of Advent, from the 1st to the 24th December, people can create a festive window, where everyone is welcome and sometimes offered “Glühwein and snacks”.

I chose to illustrate my wall-hanging with cute forest animals, Christmas decorations against the night sky, and a mouse preparing Christmas pastries. I adjusted the design to fit 2 meters of fabric and uploaded it under my profile on Spoonflower.

In order to get a good quality print on 2 meters of fabric, I worked with Adobe Illustrator. That’s definitely one of the advantages with a vector-based program: you have the freedom to zoom your design up as big as you like without any loss of quality.

Finally, I ordered 2 meters of linen cotton canvas, eco-printed by Spoonflower and sewed the advent wall-hanging.

Originally I had the idea to hang this inside one of our large windows, but then I realized when we tried it outside it’s much clearer and more special. But my learning: think of possible wind that might blow your wall-hanging away!

Spoonflower tea towel with a cute advent design
Fabric and sewing machine
Window with hanging advent curtain showing cute forest animals, Christmas decorations and a baking mouse

So on the 5th of December, it was time to hang up my design where it will remain until after Christmas.

Followed by a small apéro for spontaneous visitors and some lovely chats, the cute forest animals are now watching the little mouse preparing more cookies for Christmas eve. What might the mouse be baking?

Happy Holidays!

PS: This design also looks good as a curtain in a children’s room or on a tea towel. You can find it in my Spoonflower shop.

Adventure block prints – A fun design project for everyone

A block print-style is something I like very much on fabric and on products from other designers, so it was great news to spot the Adventure Block Prints Design Challenge organized by Spoonflower.

Either as a single pattern concept on a piece of paper or a repeat pattern for fabric design

A block print-style is something I like very much on fabric and on products from other designers, so it was great news to spot the Adventure Block Prints Design Challenge organized by Spoonflower.

The block print style reminds me of screen printing. But with screen printing you need some infrastructure, whereas to achieve a block print look, you can easily create your stamps and prints whenever you are using for example, Foam Rubber. The cutter I have used here is the cutter SW-600GP with a swivel mechanism (which works very well for small details) and acrylic paint. For this challenge, I got a sheet of Foam Rubber and drew some “easy” icons o it with a pen. As I cut up a pineapple for breakfast that morning, one of the icons ended up being a pineapple :-) After cutting the icons out I glued them on to jam jar lids (You could use something similar).

Image cut blue whale
Image icons clued on jam lids

And inspired by one of my recent pattern designs, I cut out some blackbirds and just for fun a cute whale and some trees.

Usually I create my illustrations in Adobe Illustrator because I like the flexibility to easily change scales and colours without any loss of quality. That’s why I created a print I would image trace in Adobe Illustrator later.

For that I put acrylic paint on the bottom of each object (you can mix it with water) and stamped them as shown below onto some paper. As I wanted to image trace the result in Adobe Illustrator, I used black paint, but you could also use any other colour. And when you want to put a pupil in an eye, use a brush or cut out a small round to stamp the pupil into the eye.

Image print example whale
Image sheet with different prints

After the stamps dried I scanned the image. For a good contrast between black and white, I made some adjustments in Adobe Photoshop. Then, with the image trace tool I turned my icons into vectorized objects, which made it easy for me to recolour, copy, scale and arrange them. Finally, I created the pattern “Blackbirds in the Woods” and uploaded it to Spoonflower.

Game Instructions "Find my Best Friend" on the Secret Shell Path

Will you help Little Red the crab find his friend Konradin? Join him on his adventure through the secret shell path and play the game!

The two crab friends Little Red and Konradin have recently discovered oil painting. Unfortunately, they ran out of paint after a short time. Therefore they set out to find some new paint. But where in the ocean can you find a paint shop? On their journey, Konradin was suddenly sucked away by an empty tanker, and the two of them got separated from each other. Will you help Little Red find his friend? Join him on his adventure on the secret shell path!

To play the game

You can Download the Game Instructions here

To play the game, you need a dice, game board pieces (for example some stones), and the game board made from fabric.

You can find a simple step by step guide for making the game board HERE.

The winner is the first person to find the crab Konradin (the first person to reach number 95). When you land on a yellow shield, don’t forget, you have to go with the connecting element to the green shell. On the red and white checkerboard pattern you have to miss a turn. On the square with the blue net pattern you can roll the dice again.

You can roll the dice again

You have to miss a turn

Follow the shark from the yellow to the green shell: an example of MOVING FORWARDS

Follow the flute fish from the yellow to the green shell: an example of MOVING BACKWARDS

Do you want to know why you have to miss a turn? Look under the corresponding numbers.

Shell 6: You watch the friendly grey reef shark eat a fish

Shell 13: Turtle cleaning station - You wait for the smaller fish to arrive. They will then clean the turtles.

Shell 26: You are lucky! A nautilus from the deep sea is swimming to the surface. A must see!

Shell 36: You help Little Red identify strange objects. It takes about 400 years for plastic to decompose into tiny pieces in the ocean (these are also called micro plastic)

Shell 59: You discover the crab Konradin and try to draw attention to yourself

Shell 68: You free Little Red from a ghost net

Shell 79: You observe colourful and fascinating reef fish on the water surface

Shell 88: You wait until the big whale shark has swum above you

Have fun! :-)

Easy Sewing Tutorial - Ocean Game "Find my Best Friend" on Fabric

Create your own fabric game board Find my Best Friend in just a few steps.

Deutsch

Create your fabric game board in just a few steps!

You will need:

-       A sewing machine and sewing thread

-       Any piece of fabric for the underside (Size approx 53 x 45cm / 21 x 18 inch)

-       Fabric scissors or rotary cutter

-       Measuring tape

-       Bias tape for the hem (I used 20mm with a length of 3.5m)

-       A fat quarter of the fabric "Find my best friend", which you can get in my Spoonflower shop. The fabric will be printed eco-friendly in Berlin or the USA and shipped to your home within a few days. Important: choose the size Fat Quarter (52.5 x 45 cm = 21 x 18 inch) and the fabric "Petal Signature Cotton". (Fat Quarter sizes vary depending on the fabric you choose)

Step 1:

Wash the two pieces of fabric, iron them and lay them on top of each other. Now cut along the marking of the game board with scissors or rotary cutter.

Step 2:

Wrap the bias tape around the edges of both fabrics (see picture below). Attach the tape with pins. If you want to be sure that nothing slips, tack along the edges.

Step 3:

Now sew everything together. Use a straight stitch and place the foot on the outer edge of the hem. Align the needle position so that you sew through all the pieces. Sew around the outer edge and double stitch about 3 cm at the end.

Step 1: Cut the two pieces of fabric to the same size

Step 2: Attach the bias tape to the outer edge

Pin or clip the tape to the two materials as shown above

Step 2: If you want to be sure that nothing slips, tack along the edges by hand

Step 3: Sew everything together with the sewing machine

Horaz! Your own fabric game board is ready!

Step 4: optional

Make a few game pieces. For example, decorate some stones by painting them or even sticking stickers on them.

Et voilà! Your personalised fabric game "Find my best friend" is ready! You can find the game instructions HERE.

Feel free to post your final project on Instagram and make sure to tag me @priskakranzillustration #littlebigocean #merupri. I'm looking forward to seeing your result!
